I almost sent my heater back before deciding to read the instructions. It only turns itself on after reaching a certain low temperature and then it doesn't thaw the whole bird bath, just an area about 2 to 3 inches larger than the heater. I guess this is good so it doesn't get too hot and damage a fragile bath. Birds and squirrels like it over the frozen non-heated bird bath next to it.
