Bird's Choice "Green Solutions" Green Recycled Plastic Bluebird Feeder

The item itself is great, being recycled and such. Unfortunately my bluebirds haven't touched the feeder (I had to put my half rotted wood one back up) and the starlings can get to the food since the distance from hole to bottom is shorter then at my old feeder. At this point I can't use it for what it was intended.

I bought this feeder since I thought it would keep starlings out. Unfortunately, my bluebirds are so fat they couldn't get into it either. I had to bore out the hole to make it bigger. I took the recommendation from another reviewer and did modifications. Truthfully, I should have returned it and got my money back.

Do not buy this feeder unless you are willing to make a few modifications to prevent trapping and potentially killing your bluebirds. Once bluebirds get inside they get trapped. Follow these Simple mods to make this a 5 star item: 1. Place stickers, tape, or decals on the glass and roof so bluebirds can see the plexiglass. 2. Use a dremel tool disk cutter bit to cut 3 horizontal lines under the entry holes about 3/4 of an inch apart. The first one about a half inch under the entry holes. Do this on the outside as well as the inside of the feeder. So the birds can easily get in and out. (Cutting bit is $5 if you don't own a dremel tool just use a normal drill with the bit. The plastic is soft) look at bluebird nesting box designs for reference. 3. Take a file and taper the outside and inside of the holes leaving the center at 1.5 inches. Makes it easier to enter and exit. 4. Attached a small piece of all weather Velcro to the bottom of the dish and the bottom of the dish hole to keep the bowl from falling out. After these Simple mods this feeder works incredible. We have bluebirds in and out all day long. Sometimes as many as 3 at a time inside eating.

Don't waste your money. I thought this might be a reasonably priced solution to keep the starlings from eating all the mealworms ($35.00 compared to about $70.00 for the round wire mesh feeders) but it's really worthless if used as recommended. While the bluebirds did take to it while the plexiglass sides were out of the feeder, the cup kept getting knocked out and of course the starlings could still get in. I finally put both sides in and not only can't most bluebirds get in, one was stuck inside and couldn't get out! I had to go out and lift the top so it could escape.
