Many people really enjoy watching, feeding and learning about birds. This hobby offers one an opportunity to appreciate, delight, and connect to the natural world.

Bluebirds are one of the most well-liked birds in North America. The popularity of bluebirds has featured them in stories, poems and movies where they signify love, happiness and hope. Eastern Blue Birds measure about 6 1/2 inches in length. The coloration of the eastern bluebird differs somewhat between adult male and female birds. The male has bright blue upperparts, reddish breast, and a white belly. The female has a buffy throat and breast, grayish-blue head and back with light blue wings and tail.

Perches such as fence posts and fence wires are often utilized to view for unwary insects. Bluebirds have also been observed hovering for insects to prey upon. Bluebirds will use wild fruits, berries and seeds during the fall to prepare them for their migration south.

This wild bird is rather widespread east of the Rocky Mountains. Bluebirds can be found in rural gardens, orchards, and suburban gardens near open fields. These birds usually arrive in early spring. Bluebirds feed primarily on insects in the spring and summer. They will also eat suet, fruits and berries.

Many people attract these beautiful birds by providing bluebird feeders. Many different styles are available for purchase. Many people obtain both feeders and nest boxes for this species. Mount a bluebird feeder in a location where bluebirds have been seen, but not too close to the bluebird house. This may attract predators to the nest box. Observing bluebirds could provide hours of enjoyment and may help this special species survive adverse conditions.

Bluebirds love mealworms. They can be purchased at most local sporting or fishing stores where they are sold for bait. Mealworms are insects, not really worms. The mealworm is the larval form of the beetle. They make excellent food for bluebirds and can be added to your blue bird feeder. Some bluebird enthusiasts provide these worms so that incubating females have a ready supply of food for their young and do not need to travel a great distance to find food for the fledglings.
