I was generally quite pleased with this item. However, the paint used on it was of mediocre quality and necessitated that I repaint it using a better outer coating.
Took a little time to assemble so that it was level but wit patience it went well and is sturdy.
The best feeder for wet weather I have ever seen. Birds have actually increased since installing this design. The old conventional feeder would clog up after a rein and was a pain to clean out. Just keep it filled and forget it for a week or so. I cannot understand other post that states they have no birds dining at their new feeder. I have 2 of these feeders on a single T stand and I have as many as 12 birds of all kinds feeding together. No (CONS) except I might spend too much time watching the little rascals feeding.
It is a good thing I know how to repair things. The first couple of days the bigger birds tried to get to the food, they broke the chain on top and when it hit the ground the lid keepers bent and the lid would not stay closed. I got some of my nylon braided cord out and replaced the lid keepers and made a new tether that replaced the chain. Now ti works great and I have no problems.
It works ok if there is no wind.
The premise is great, but I would make it a bit larger. I feel it may be a little to confining for a Bluebird, once he's inside. Also where the hinge joint is I would add an overhang of cedar to keep water from leaking down into the interior, or somehow try to redesign to keep water out.. The roof should overhang the sides & front as well (maybe 1.75"), again keeping rain from running down the side, and possibly into the hole openings. The location of holes appears good, but so far although Bluebirds have entered from the front when the plexiglass has been removed initially for them to feed, I've had no luck getting them to enter via the holes when plexiglass is installed. I haven't given up, and will continue to be patient. All in all the idea to keep grackles & Starlings from emptying feeder is great, just needs a few tweaks here & there, to be the best bluebird feeder around.
